NEW: Adult Protection Law – guardianship reformed

The new Adult Protection Law (Erwachsenenschutzrecht) has been in force since 1 July 2018. The reform completely redesigns the law on guardianship (Sachwalterschaft).

Previously, persons with mental illness or comparable impairments had to be represented by close relatives under an enduring power of attorney or by a court-appointed guardian.

The new Adult Protection Act opens up entirely new options. All forms of representation must, however, be registered in the Austrian Central Register of Representation (ÖZVV).
